Guest Post-Joseph Kimondo's
The event is a fine dining experience held in complete darkness and assisted by highly qualified visually impaired staff.
This week, we have a guest post from Joseph Kimondo about his Dine in the Dark Experience that was held at Sarova Panafric last Wednesday and Thursday.
This is what he had to say about Gizani's Dine in the Dark Experience.
"Gizani, Dine in the dark!
These five words were foreign 24 hours ago! Visualising it was not only horrific but a dead end to a wild mind. Yet eventually I dare to say that it is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had.
I wish I could meet all of you and tell you in person. Perhaps even paint the sky with my gizani experience or even better sit next to you in the next dine in the dark date!
As a layman food is food, I rarely if ever do any fine dining. Perhaps what I care about more is an awesome experience, one that creates unforgettable memories! At first, I likened Gizani with eating in a black out. How wrong I was!
Dine in the dark-is an experience that helps you put on the shoes of visually impaired person and helps you appreciate them in a special way! One of the founders Abdul is visually impaired and is one of the coolest guyz I have come across. Full of stories from here to Timbuktu. We had 2 waiters: Sam and Lorna. All visually impaired!
Before we got in, we are briefed. All electronics and any source of lighting is surrendered to be collected when you are done. Shortly we are divided into groups of seven. Records of any allergies are taken. I hate fish so I quickly register my 'allergy'.
Lorna our waiter is introduced to us and she requests that we make a straight line, place your left hand on the left sholder of the person infront of you. Lorna is our head driver and am our 'tail'. Slowly we walk into darkness. Equivalent of what you see when you close your eyes!
Lorna, a very polite waiter guides us through and helps us all face our fears of darkness. She guides us all to our seats. She tells us what we can't see, the location of our cutlery and glasses. You want to serve water or wine its infront of you, serve it! Shortly hot towels are delivered, appetizer, main course and dessert. Eventually a massage is offered! In all this there we drown in laughter as we bond and dig into our dishes which we keep guessing what they are.
In the middle of all this I wonder what a visually impaired person goes through. They may not know the beauty of colour but their touch, taste, hearing and smelling senses are seasoned. I ask Lorna, are you on social media, she says she is. Through an application called push and talk she can text call and do everything you can do, even post! Hope they get to like this post smile emoticon
This is an experience I highly recommend, do it at least in groups of five. If you do it less it may not be as exciting! Below are pictures of what I ate but couldn't see, the great team who facilitated.
You think you love adventure you want a unique dining experience Wonna create memories Want to bond with family / Friends Want to team build over a meal You want an awesome experience¿ Gizani, Dine in the dark is the answer! It is here for you!"
