Its people are warm and welcoming, the social scene is a mix of traditional and contemporary vibes not forgetting it is the gateway to plenty of adventure, serving as a transit town to most of our Safari destinations.
Urbanization that is more recent has not taken away its charm of being the only city in the world to have a wildlife reserve in its midst – The Nairobi National Park. Several other attractions that give Nairobi its appeal include tours to the Nairobi Museum, The Giraffe Centre, The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, The Bomas of Kenya, The Karura & Arboretum Forests, and weekly Masaai craft markets among many others.

The Nairobi Social Scene
Nairobi boasts a thriving and diverse social scene. Art, music, food and wine festivals featuring international and local artists add to the flair while notable spots for whiling an afternoon away include the Westgate, Garden City and Village Market malls which also host a plethora of exquisite restaurants. The nightlife is arguably one of the best in Africa, each evening coming alive to electrifying entertainment till late.
Giraffe Centre
Get close up and personal with the giraffes. Hand feeding these magnificent creatures is a unique experience - they take food straight from your hand with their long blue tongues.
National Museum
The National Museum hosts a fascinating range of cultural and natural history exhibits. There are huge galleries of recreations of wildlife, Kenyan tribal group culture, rock art and an exhibition of hominid fossils from Lake Turkana in the north of Kenya. The National Museum opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 9.30am to 6pm.
Karen Blixen Museum
This museum is the original farmhouse where the writer Karen Blixen (author of Out Of Africa) lived between 1914 and 1931. It is set amidst beautiful gardens and is a famous piece of Nairobi's cultural history. The Museum opening hours are Monday to Sunday, between 9.30am and 6pm.
David Sheldrick Animal Trust
Here you will see young orphaned African animals being reared in as close to their natural environment as possible. Depending on when you visit there's a good chance you'll be able to pet a baby elephant and watch them suckle an elephant sized bottle. The trust is only open to the public for one hour each day, between 11am and 12 noon.
Nairobi National Park
Enjoy a Safari in the city. Nairobi National Park is the only national park to border a city of this size. It is over 100 kilometers of plains, cliffs and forest, home to large herds of Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Giraffe, Rhino, Cheetah, and Lions, living wild within 20 minutes of the centre of town. The park is open for visitors between 9am and 5pm, seven days per week.
Bomas of Kenya
This is a cultural village where each boma (homestead) was built using traditional techniques of different Kenyan tribes. Through architecture, crafts, music and dance this village serves to preserve and display traditional Kenyan culture. Visiting hours are 2.30pm - 4.30pm Monday to Friday, and 3.30pm -5.20pm on weekends.
Railway Museum
The railway forms a huge part of the History of the city. Take a wander into the past and view the beautifully kept engines and carriages from the colonial days of the East Africa Railways. There are also fascinating displays of extraordinary railway memorabilia and artifacts. Opening hours are 8.15am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday.
National Archives
The National Archives is a reservoir of historical and cultural knowledge. View the extensive collection of artifacts, photographs and publications documenting Kenya's diverse and rich history. Opening hours are 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday, and 9am - 11am on Saturdays.
Tennis at The Royal Nairobi Club
Charges: Ksh 300pp (with a partner) Additional Ksh 300 for a club coach. Rackets and balls not provided.
Golf
Charges: Weekdays Ksh 250pp per game, weekends Ksh 350pp per game.
Horse Racing at Ngong Race Course
The sport of Kings takes place in a grand setting only twenty minutes out of the city.
HELPFUL TIPS
Getting Around Nairobi
Walking around Nairobi is relatively simple, as the city centre is small and accessible. However, walking at night is not recommended, and during the day it is best to seek the hotel's Concierge's guidance on where to go before setting out.
Shopping in Nairobi
Nairobi is probably the best place in East Africa for buying African traditional fabrics, craft, beads, pottery, rugs, weaving and wool. Some of the shopping places of note include:- The Village Market, Sarit Centre, The Junction, Capital Centre, Maasai Market, Westlands Market and Yaya Centre among others.
Taxis
Pan Cab, as our taxis are known are reliably available 24 hours a day. When you need a taxi service, just go to Front Office Car Park. When away from the hotel, you can call the hotel to send you a taxi or otherwise note that general cabs are usually marked with a yellow line along each side and packed in strategic places. Importantly, taxi fares are not metered, and a price should be agreed with the driver before departure.
Bars and Clubs
Kenyan is a partying nation! And Kenyans are party animals. Subsequently, Nairobi is filled with many great places to do so. In the upper echelons are: Kiza Lounge, Mawimbi, Brew Bistro Lounge, Skylux Lounge, Mercury Lounge, Galileo Lounge, Bacchus Lounge, among others.
